What’s Causing Your PCOS?

Have you been diagnosed with PCOS? My guess is you were told that your ovaries appear polycystic on ultrasound, that your only treatment option is the birth control pill, to take the pill until you want to have kids, at which point you'll probably struggle to get pregnant. Sound familiar?

The truth is that PCOS is a complex constellation of signs and symptoms with many possible root causes. You absolutely have a variety of treatment options available to you - it just depends on what is causing YOUR particular type of PCOS. For treatment to be successful it has to be highly individualized, which is why I'm not a fan of the blanket birth control pill treatment approach.

The most common root causes of PCOS are:

  1. Insulin resistance

  2. Inflammation

  3. Post-birth control pill syndrome

  4. Elevated androgens

  5. Adrenal dysfunction

Before you can tackle your PCOS you've got to figure out why it's happening in the first place. In my practice, I use blood testing to determine the root case of a patient’s PCOS. Based on the results of a patient’s bloodwork, I can determine why their PCOS developed and create a comprehensive plan to tackle their PCOS diagnosis, without using the birth control pill.
